What did your salesman say when you bought it?

Post by Whelan »

Out of curiousity. I used to be an Acura salesman and I remember my manager who used to work for Saturn telling me how when the VUE came out with the 240hp Honda V6 he would actually tell people that "folks, its a Honda engine, it'll run forever." Good ploy I guess (albeit true for the moment). But did anyone ever have the Pontiac guy say "It was built with Toyota...." or "It's a less expensive Matrix." To kinda play off of the Toyota reliability thing. Not starting a flame, not trying to boil people, just genuinely curious to if it was mentioned and if so, how? To me it would make no sense since the cars are 99% the same. But just wondering what your experiences were with that.I have never bought a Pontiac so I am not sure how their dealers operate. I have owned two GM's (Saturns).

LOL, I have to laugh at my salesman, cause he wasn't a salesman at all. I already knew I wanted the vibe when I walked in, and it was the one I wanted.... but I didn't tell them that. While on the "test drive" we were tlaking to him (just general chat) and I was talking about Fords (yes I bought my GM at a Ford dealership *gasp*), and I said something about the SVT contour, and he thought I was tlaking about the Cobra... and then I said how I really like the Ford GT, but I can't afford that kind of $200,000 price tag, and he started saying how "Yeah the mustang GT can be expensive"... I was like.... if you work at a dealership shouldn't you at least know what you sell.... so I knew there was NO hope of him knowing anything about the Vibe...

He said it was a partnership with Toyota, and that the drivetrain was Toyota. Didn't matter much what he said tho. I'm a GM fan, and I wanted something affordable that wasn't a cobalt /G5

My salesman said, its a toyota engine and drive train and look its cheaper. Plus the vibe had fog lights and rims. This was at the Hertz used car sales so they only sell at a certain price and only have 1 model of that car but diff colors. I knew prior to it being a toyota engine and what not but it was nice that he was honest

He had no ideal what a vibe was and nothing about it, he was just there to give me a test drive and fill out paperwork.

I checked out a used Matrix at a Toyota dealer (obviously not the car I bought!) .. I mentioned that I was looking at Vibes too... The salesman tried to tell me that Vibes weren't built as well as the Matrix was, since it was "GM's product" and they had different standards. Yuh huh, that would mean the Corollas on the same production line would be just as bad? I didn't buy a car off him.

My salesman said "won't you come up $500?" (I said no.)

Initially they said "how about this Grand Am GT?" and I was like "hey are these fake hood scoops?" and he's like "yeah" and I said "That's sad...no".

(repeat about 72,347 times)". i already knew more than he coulda told me about the car, so i pretty much did all the talkin when it came to specs n stuff. the toyota dealer i went to after lookin at the vibe immediately tried layin pontiac insults n lies on me after i told him i was really interested in the vibe. i told em i'd take a trix if they could get me an xr-s that day or by the same time the next day for the exact same price. they said there was one in LA (about 2 hours from my house) and they could get it to me the next day, but failed to come through on the price match, which was nothin more than a huge waste of time for me. the manager and salesman i was dealin with were really rude, and i can see why the 2 toyota dealers out here have bad reps when it comes to new car sales

I had "kid newbie" for a salesman, luckily I had a good idea of what I was looking at since I scouted out the purchase 3 months earlier and had my ducks in a row.He barely said anything, and knew nothing about the car, poor kid looked like a deer in headlights through most of the process, I felt bad for him.

My salesman didn't seem to know much about the car. He had to get the platinum AWD from a different dealership. He told me how much fun it was to drive back from the other dealership (only about 10 miles away). That was the first time he had ever driven one. I knew what I wanted when I got there so he didn't have much to say. I'm sure I got hosed on the trade-in but I didn't want to take the time to see it myself. I got a letter from him and he is no longer with the dealership. He wasn't that good a salesman where I would follow him. Actually, I've never met any salesman that I would follow because they were that good or knowledgeable.Mike

Yeah, I ditched the dealership drag after only about 6-7months. Work from 830am to 8pm everyday, including Saturdays from 830-5pm. Closed Sundays and you got one day off during the week to supplement. But who wants to take a Friday off when its a busy day, ugh The girl who sold me my Trix was hot, hot, hot! Luckily I already dealt with her over the phone and online so the price was already agreed upon...(after the manager had to call me, lol). Sucked I had to bring my gf with me otherwise I would have grabbed some lunch with her, hahahaha!Initially after lookin at a few Highlanders and realizing they were def. overpriced for pre-owned. The Rav 4 was too girly for me. The last generations, not the new. And I saw a Trix that night in the lot but didnt really look at it. When I started researching online it seemed to fit everything I needed so I went back for a look and a drive. Fell in love. The car just fit me and felt so comfortable to drive I couldnt resist. Then the one month 4 state search (yes CT, NY, RI, MA) for the one I wanted. A NY dealer had one and I called on it, was ready to give them a deposit after talkin with them and seeing it online. Well it was the wrong picture (and not a file one either) had no sunroof, and was sold two weeks ago. Good updating on that site, lol. I didn't trade in the Civic, 02 5spd. EX with $74,000 miles. Honda said 7k, Toyota said maybe $5,500. I sold it on my own for $9,800. Blue Book Excellent condition at the time was $9,700 Was able to walk into the dealer with $3,000 down, suhweet! I also bought mine Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) cause I wanted the powertrain coverage and warranty, its the only way I'll buy a car.

We found our Vibe online (cars.com) at a Nissan dealership. The salesman didn't seem to know much (about anything). We walked in, showed him the VIN number from the website, and said "we want to see this one" and that was it. At first he acted like he wasn't sure they still had the car (probably wanted us to look at new Nissans instead). During the test drive, he didn't even talk to us at all. After getting the Carfax report, it looked like they'd only had the car on their lot for a week.

The salesman that I dealt with on the Vibe actually worked for the same company that I do prior to his (short) stint at the car dealer. So, we were talking more about the people that it turns out I knew and he knew as well moreso than the car. I later found that this dude boinked a good friend of mine's (ex)wife back when they were married! And that he quit a job at Burger King he once held - walked out in his boxers. What a cool guy, to think I bought a car from that moron.

My salesman knew nothing about the car at all. Luckily I did all the research ahead of time. I don't think he even knew what a Vibe was before I showed up, and it was a Pontiac/GMC dealership.

My salesman was a nice guy, really helpful. But I knew more about the car than him, I have a good friend who started selling me on the Vibe last summer then I spent 2 months here before making my purchase, I came in with the car I wanted and where it was printed out so all he had to do was get it, so no work and all $$ for my salesman.

Are you sure you don't want a red one???yesAre you sure you want a sunroof???yesAlright then, I'll have the dealer 300 miles away bring it in!awesome!Kinda went something like that but it was a little more of a drawnout process than that! Like the others, I already knew more about the car than my salesgirl, but that's how it usually is for my family and me.No mention for Toyota, other than when I brought it up she said, "yup, not much difference between the 2",

Well I initially went to a Toyota dealer and took out a red '05 XRS. I liked it a lot and we went through the #'s, etc. I told him I was going to Pontiac after that and he was telling me that the Vibe wouldn't have as high a resale and stuff like that. The cost of the XRS was going to be about $100/month more than an 06 Vibe but they said they'd match the Vibe price if I got it in writing. Anyway, I went to Pontiac, was treated well, they weren't very flexible on the price though because I was already getting a union discount to make it 2% over dealer price. They wouldn't throw rubber mats or anything in, and I had to cut out a few things like the aluminum rims and M&T stereo to get the price where I wanted. But the salesman was nice and said if I wanted anything for the car to let him know and he'd get it for the employee price. So I bought rubber mats, cargo mat and a bug deflector and saved a bit with his discount. But I'm happy and glad I went with the Vibe since the GT's and XRS's have the clutch problems. Besides in the XRS it seemed like I was constantly shifting.

I would have taken a red Matrix AWD XR. But it was hard enough to find a black one with the B package options (sunroof 6disc in dash, etc.) So I was between dark grey, black, or red.

At one point during the test drive I apologized for my clumsy Clutch work, because I was use to the Heavy clutch on the WRX. The sales man said "Don't worry about it, there was an Asian guy last week that didn't drive stick very well, seemed like he was trying his darnedest to burn it up, and the Vibe just took it. Thoughts Asian's don't know how to drive very well." I'm a Caucasian man engaged to a Filipino woman, I was shocked when he said that. But I didn't let the sales mans racist comments wreck my test drive experience.

Personally I don't like talking to Sales People. When I test drive I don't have them come with me. I do all my homework and go to the dealership when they are closed to check out the stock. If I see something that I may like, I'll go back durning Business Hours and ask to test drive. I don't even listen to them anymore as I found that even when you do have questions and ask the sales people have no clue what you are talking about. I've met one that was edjucated enough to know what he was selling. IMO they are all BS artists and only care about making that commission. I haven't found one yet that actually Sells based on the customer needs. I quit a couple of sales jobs because the owners were WAAAAYYY to shady and wanted me to tell people what they wanted to hear. Not what was good for the customer. Sorry for the Rant - But in general people have become a lot more shady than they used to be.

I typically bypass the salesmen and talk directly with the manager to close my deals. When I was in sales I was always letting people walk out. My managers hated me for it. They used to run on a policy on if they want the car give you a credit card and make an offer. I hated it.I would let people do their business and find out what they were interested aside from the car I showed them. I would also explain that I do know the other vehicles answer what they wanted about them, but tell them that they need to drive them all. It's only good research for them. None of this you drove our car, you liked our car, why not buy our car crap that my managers would pull. Hence I did not work they long. But I still sold 8-10 cars a month and was banking 5k a month.
