Most miles on a tank of gas

Post by furrydogs »

Every fill up I try and push the total miles travelled higher and higher. Last tank of gas I put in 12.4 gallons and travelled 396 miles. What's the most miles someone's gotten on a tank of gas?

I have never personally ran my tank that low to need 12.4 gallons. That is dangerously low when the tank size is only 13.2 gallons. I don't think I would want to risk running out of gas. BTW, do you do a lot of highway driving? I figure that you got 31.9 mpg. That's great! I always fill up every Tuesday because in our area they run all three grades of gas the price of regular unleaded. That helps me out a great deal since I have to run premium gas in my GT. I average around 23 to 25 mpg due to the fact that I mostly do city driving. On the average week, I drive 150 to 175 miles and I fill up with about 7 to 7 1/2 gallons of gas.

I got 396 miles by driving about 70% highway. I have yet to see the 36 MPG that the EPA was touting on the sticker. I'll be doing a long road trip this summer so I am hoping to see 35 MPG +. I am surprised that a little 1.8 Liter can't manage to consistently get over 30 MPG. In high school I had a 4 door Mazda GLC with a carbureated 1.4 that would get over 40 on the highway. I figured 20 years of technology could have increased mileage and not decreased it.

The old economy cars (I had a Honda 600 sedan) used gas sipping whimpy motors and fairly light bodies to squeeze 40 miles out of a gallon. My honda was 2 cylinders and air cooled, and got 40 MPG no matter where I drove it, city or highway. But there was no "zoom zoom" to that car, and I doubt any car that gets a reliable 40mpg has any zoom to it. Technology HAS improved, but we bought Pontaic Vibes, not Honda Hybrids.I'm not expecting miracles from the Vibe. I like to drive mine fast. It has not got a smooth aerodynamic profile. It's tall and bumpy, both things that slow it down in the wind. And it's got gearing chosen to be "fun" to drive rather than efficient. I have yet to see what my best range might be. The only thing I've noticed is that I have to fill up less often in this Vibe than I did in the small pickup it replaced. That's a good thing. KSNeptune

I haven't seen anybody posting mileage even 90% of the rated numbers.Sure, many of us have not really broken in ours cars yet but the Civic I replaced with my Vibe was within 90% within a couple of thousand miles.I put down a few hundred miles a week for work and I really like my Vibe; but if the mileage estimates had been more realistic I wouldn't have even considered buying it.

How did you get that much on a tank? The most I get is just over 450 KM on a tank.

My best is 242 miles on about 11.2 gallons. But I only have about 2500 miles on the car so far. I typically get about 225 miles on about 11 gallons. I might get a bit more once the car has a bit more mileage on it and after I change to synthetic oil.csjrishere, remember some of these posts are from people driving in the Michigan flatlands. Around here in Pittsburgh, you can only expect some of those mileage numbers if you are driving a car with less horsepower than the average riding mower. For people like me, who expect to pass grandpa in his Buick Park Avenue after holding up traffic by going 20 mph under the speed limit for 15 miles, we can expect a little less fuel economy. I'll gladly fill up twice per week as long as the car has the guts to pass easily and have a little fun in the daily stoplight to stoplight races.

I've only had my Vibe for about 2 months and am very pleased with it's gas mileage. All city driving so far. I have the 4 speed auto that's rated at 28/33. Actual: 1st tank-32.1852nd - 30.4753rd - 32.2094th - 29.774 (must have got on it a bit)I can't wait to see what it will do on the highway.

i would have to average for mine and she is fully broken in and i have done many highway trips, but winter has been very cold most of the time and definately affecting fuel economy.about a 3weeks ago on my regular trip to Hamilton wheather variations of 15deg C. played super havok on the Vibe. I did maybe 100km on a quater tank.I'm goin down on Thursday, so I will let you all know on Monday my results. I'm also changing the oil before my return trip so hopefully I'll be able to give some accurate findings. I'll post all details for you guys to examine.

I got 389 miles out of one tank in one day during a Christmastime interstate trip, going between 70-80 mph with no A/C and traversing only moderate rolling hills. The temperature was in the 60s.

Over the last 10,000 km I've averaged 9.3 litres/100km, about 90% highway driving, usually 95 - 105 kmph. It's definitely been worse since the cold weather started and there's been more time spent warming up the car. Best tank so far: 6.8l/100km, 640 km, back in August. I think the advertised mileage for the Vibe in Canada is 9.1 city, 6.9 highway. So, looks like I'm getting about 25% lower mileage than should be expected (combined city/highway) based on the advertised rates. But, I'm still fairly happy, it's a lot better than my husband gets in his Toyota Tundra!

Driving home from my brother's place in buffalo NY, through PA, OH, and back here to Detroit, I had about 385 miles on the tank and the low fuel light wasn't even on yet. This includes about 2 miles at W.O.T. showing some kids in a Camry who's boss. I drove to work the next day, the light came on around 395. I finally rolled into a gas station at 420 miles, and it took 12.9 gallons. Of course, the pump stopped after 8 gallons, I had to trickle in the other five by hand.. *grumble* This is a Matrix XRS (2ZZ engine).Driving around town I start looking for fuel when the trip odo hits 300, since I only get about 24mpg city.

I do mostly highway, a fair number of traffic lights, but not much stop and go, and most of it about 60 - 70 mph. Also usually by myself. Relatively flat around here. base 5 speed, 13.2 gallon tank reasonably ideal for mpg in a VibeLongest miles on a tank was 417 miles, took 10.8 gallons, about 38 mpgmost gas was 391 miles, 12.2 gallons, about 32 mpgmost outrageous mileage 316 miles, 7.6 gallons, 41.5 mpgworst mileage 276 miles, 9 gallons, 30.5 mpgaverage since mid january 9950 miles 275 gallons about 36 mpgGotta remember to account for variations in each fill up, that 41 mpg must have been at a pump that was sensitive. I try to not fill it up to the point where is spills over, so I pay more attention to the average, Try to not go past 400 miles per tank. About 3 days commute.Used to be at 1/4 tank full, it would take about 10 gallons, which is about right. Lately it seems as if the gauge is reading low, 1/4 tank and it takes less than 10 gallons.

I did a 1500 mile round trip this weekend and averaged about 31 MPG. I noticed that when I used 10% Ethanol in South Dakota my mileage suffered. I used the AC about half the time and it seemed to have a negligible effect on the MPG. I did have a tense 20 minutes when I miscalculated the next town and was super low on gas (you have to remember that out West you need to be aware of where the next town is b/c sometimes it can be up to 75 miles before the next gas station). The needle went well below "E" so I was sweating it when I finally rolled into town. I was surprised that I only put in 12.3 gallons, looks like I had room to spare. On a sidenote, I was very impressed with my Vibe for this long road trip. Cruise control worked great (except that it seems to lose its memory when it goes below a certain speed, I couldn't use Resume quite a few times) and the ride at 80+ MPH was nice.

I have just over 15,000 miles on my Vibe and it's getting its best gas mileage ever. I average between 30 and 35 mpg in mixed driving. It's strange how my mpg have been increasing since about roughly 11,000 or 12,000 miles. Maybe the engine is fully breaking in or I just drive it softer now.

I've been keeping really close track of my mileage since getting my catalytic converter problem sorted out ... here's my data (since April 29):Average: 8.04 L/100 km (35.10 US MPG)Best tank: 7.55 L/100 km (37.37 US MPG) 23 MayWorst tank: 8.83 L/100 km (31.97 US MPG) 1 MayI fill up with regular (you can't get premium out here in the sticks!). I drive 99.9% highway, at about 110 km/h (about 70 MPH). I also have an AWD. It's flat here, but I'm often bucking a big wind on the way home (90 km/h gusts one day last week).

"room to spare"... yeah. I try to find a pump where the pavement is sloped, and park so the driver's side of the car is higher than the passenger side. This seems to reduce the tendency of the pump to stop so prematurely.I wonder if I could add an air bag on the rear driver's side suspension, and just put a switch next to the fuel door release, to inflate the bag and lift that corner of the vehicle while I refuel. Then locate a release valve such that when I close the fuel door, it lets the air out and I can get back to driving.Stupid complexity for a simple problem? My specialty.

Sorry about the formatting here - I don't know a good way to share this data. I drive about 50% hwy and this is my total mileage to date. There is only one partial fillup in this data (2nd tankfull). Notice how awful my mileage was in the winter. I wasn't letting it sit and idle at all, but I think that topic has already been discussed. 6000 miles later, I'm still over 27MPG!! It will be interesting to see if this actually improves with synthetic oil or CAI. Export from Fuel Log on the Palm eh? The most I have put on a tank so far is 340 mi, the low fuel light consistently comes on ~300 mi. I normally fill up at 1/2 tank.At 9,000 miles, Fuel Log still has me averaging a tad below 29. This is predominately highway driving, but a bit of stop-and-go city stuff as well. 50 mi/day commute. I can easily get 34 for strictly highway, but as soon as you hit the exit ramp, the mileage drops like a rock. That's to be expected, I guess...In comparison, my friend has had a Vibe equipped like mine (base/auto) for two months now, with close to 3,000 miles. The max he's gone was 340 or so before filling up, no low fuel light at that point. I beamed Fuel Log over to him, he's been keeping track of mileage from the beginning as I have. Close to 34 average for his car, he commutes about 80 mi/day and maybe does 5 minutes of non-interstate driving.

I got 36mpg on a trip to cranbrook BC last sept, one month after buying our second vibe, avg 31-32mpg on a trip to north dakota last month.nothing like the 56mpg i use to get with my old geo metro xfi (1.0L 3 cyl). of course bikes could pass me on the grades, yuk yuk. it was a good old car though.

Wow, must be nice! I was surprised today when I went to fill up (the light was on and almost to E) and I had recorded 200 miles since my last fill-up! That is a mix of around town and highway miles and is about 20 miles higher than normal! I wish I got the mileage you guys do, but my foot is firmly planted on the floor!

Best so far (have owned the car 2 weeks) was 396 miles and it took 11.5 gallons to fill it back up. I've been getting 33mpg mixed highway and city driving here in Miami. Keep the rpms below 3k during your jack rabbit starts and you'll stop complaining about poor mileage people!

Hey...On my trip back from SC, I was heading into Indiana rather late. Tried to locate a Marathon but decided to stop into a Shell. $29.51 for the fill-up. UGH! The mileage was impressive though 381.2 miles, the most I've put on my vibe. btw, that was 12 gallons on the fill-up.The entire trip yielded an average of 30.8 mpg, including 30% City driving. Dave

Last weekend I put 1200 miles on the vibe, 1100 of which were highway at a speed af 75 to 80. Averaged 35 mpg, and 375 miles with a fill up of 10.7 gallons. So, if you do the math, you could get 450 miles untill empty. I do believe the Vibe has a 12 gallon tank, not 13.2.

That would give me 415 miles with one gallon still left....

BS475 miles with an 11.9 gallon tank? Assuming you used every bit of those 11.9 gallons, rendering your car useless as you rolled into the gas station, that's 39.9 mpg. Not gonna happen unless you started at the top of a mountain and rolled down it, and proceeded to drive highway the rest of the trip and never go back uphill. And even then it's a stretch.Anyway, when I first got mine, I was averaging about 300 miles to a tank, the light would come on around 320. Nowadays, for some reason, I can typically make it about 380 before the light comes on. I hit 425 once, with the light being on for quite some time. I've got a base, 13.2 gallon tank, and I put 12.9 gallons in it at the fillup. 32.9mpg, give or take a few hundredths. Haven't ever hit that again though!

We may need another clarification on fill up...Some people fill only to the first click. I do not.I can put in at least 2 more gallons, after the first click, before it will spill out.so i can put in 13.5 gallons when the low fuel light first goes on...

I've had the light turn on at 611km!Yesterday it turned on at 570km and i had a bit of a hassle today finding an open gas station in the morning...so i ended up driving to 607km. When i filled up i was able to put in 45.571 L and that's filling it up to the VERY top. How many litres does the tank hold? I'm assuming that number doesn't include the 'neck' up to the fill entrance?
I have signatures turned off so I'm not even sure what mine says in this space!

The most miles I've ever gotten on a single tank of gas was 425.3. The mpg on that trip was 35.51.The car has gotten 40.8, but that was my Dad driving. He has a MUCH lighter foot than I do.My overall average to date is 29.62.
