The tranny issue is on the base model's 5 speed. You should be fine with any 1st gen GT and the 6 speed. In personal experience, I had an '05 5 speed go for 200K miles in my wife's Corolla, however it was a catastrophic failure when it finally went. It has a new tranny and we expect to get another 2...

The motor actuator is always under power and stalls out when the door is closed. Poor design by GM, one of the few non-Toyota parts in our cars.

I'm not going to be any help, but..... Are you sure its not an AWD? I thought the only 2nd Gens that came with the roof rack were the AWDs. Plus, as mentioned, it sounds like you're looking for an AWD wheel.

I went with a Curt hitch and wiring harness. I too have issues with the vibrating, but I deal with it. I think mine is due to the heat shield missing a nut on it. I don't know what it weighed in the end, but I towed a relatively full Uhaul 5'x8' trailer 1100 miles. How'd you get them to let you take that trailer? Did you rent it with another car?
