I drain and refill the PS reservoir once a year.
Only takes a few minutes with a piece of thin hose or a small turkey baster.
I flush the brake fluid every 3 years, same time as tire rotation.
Cheap insurance when you D.I.Y.
I suspect some of those early failures are due to the fact that (at least with my 2006 Matrix) Toyota doesn't recommend changing the trans oil except when towing. I've owned 3 5-speed Hondas and they all called for changing the trans oil every 30k miles. I changed the oil in my Matrix early at 21k m...
Suppose you bought another bottle of the stuff and dropped the cap into a cup of gas to see if it dissolves. If it does dissolve I don't think it will do harm since plastic is made from petroleum and it's such a small amount: a few grams diluted in gallons of gasoline.
Year and mileage? It's a good idea to drain and refill the transmission fluid every 30k miles.Use only the toyota fluid, not any "universal" stuff. No need to flush if you stick to this schedule.
Here's 30 minutes of another run.Driving through town then on to the highway.Warm start, ambient 61F.The intake falls to within 1 deg. of ambient after ~ 6 minutes on the highway.I was surprised I got 37mpg on this 41 mile 52 minute drive.
I re-routed the air intake on my 1zz to draw in cooler air.I wanted to disturb the stock intake (which is well designed, IMHO) as little as possible.I didn't want to spend much $$ (ended up costing And it's a 10 minute job to go back to stock.Whatever restriction the stock system has is only signifi...
My "Sport Grip" steering wheel cover was getting a little tattered and I didn't care for the plastic cord wrap and the fact that it doesn't cover all the way around. So I had an extra roll of bicycle cork handlebar tape around. I did the bottom half first since that's where I keep my hands ...

I would change the transmission fluid/oil and flush out the brake fluid.I also drain and refill the power steering reservoir once a year. And change the coolant, thermostat and radiator cap every 5 years.
A quart every 1500 miles is really not a problem. Some owners of brand new Audis would be very happy with that level of consumption.Using more at high speed cruising is perfectly normal.I recommend you go back to 5w-30 oil for better lubrication at cold start up.It wouldn't hurt to overfill 1/2 a qua...
If you change the trans fluid every 30K miles all you'll need is a drain and refill.I recommend changing the thermostat and radiator cap every 5 years on a car driven daily. If you stick with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink) or GM's equivalent a simple drain and fill every 5 years will do - no n...
Quote, originally posted by tots »Any idea why the owner's manual says it doesn't need to be changed? The marketing depts want to give the impression that their cars have low maintenance costs. So they tend to only recommend upkeep that get the car through the warranty period. Thus we get craziness li...

Quote, originally posted by beemerphile1 »Do you only drive 4,000 miles per year? If that was all I drove, MPG wouldn't be a concern.3-6000 miles per year, depends on road trips.I ride a bike to work. No, MPG is not a "concern" for me, but I'm still curious what MPG difference 0W oil will ...
For this winter I put Mobil 1 0W-30 + OEM filter.Hoping for easier starts and better mileage on short trips where the engine barely gets fully warmed up.Normally I put in whatever major brand (Castrol, Penzoil, Havoline) 5W-30 is on sale.Car is a 2006 Matrix 5-speed with 29,000 miles.Driven mostly s...
It could be that the "lifetime" fuel filter is clogged.I would take the pump out of the tank and examine it.May be possible to clean the filter.Injectors could not cause low pressure.
Quote, originally posted by belfert »That is a pretty big hole and I don't see how it being dirty could really hurt things. It's a tight clearance between the butterfly valve and the throttle bore. That's where dirt can be a problem.I needed to clean the throttle on my '88 Accord after 18 years and 2...
There's more to the difference between T and H rating than just top speed. The H rated tire has better handling characteristics at all speeds.http://www.barrystiretech.com/speedratings.html
I guess "LSL" means Lousy Stinkin' Lubricant. The oil pump is usually the last thing to go in an oil-starved engine.I would take the valve cover off and clean out any sludge there.
Not worth it if the engine is idling and running smoothly. If not smooth pour a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner in the gas tank before you give the stealership $$. I use a bottle of techron once a year. To save gas check tire inflation and wheel alignment. Check for a dragging brake: af...
I use whatever major brand dino (Penzoil, Castrol, Havoline) is on sale and an OEM filter. My last car ('88 Accord LXi) had 219K miles and 20 years of the same routine and burned no oil when I sold it.I bike to work and drive ~4000 miles a year, so I change oil every six months and filter once a year...
Another reason winter mileage is lower is increased wind resistance.A 45F drop in temperature increases air density 10%.Happens to be the same idea behind the CAI.
If it's true that you still have a CEL related to an O2 sensor the engine might be running in "open loop" mode, so the air/fuel ratio and idle speed are not being regulated like normal. The system makes a "best guess".Any changes to the intake system will not be compensated for.I ...
