Yes it's the same thing. Fourth gear is the only overdrive gear so switching to third would put you out of overdrive. You can use first and second the same way.

Haha "a big sigh"!

I would pop the hood and make sure the airbox it latched tight. it's so easy to accidentally leave one side loose on some cars. Especially if one side hooks and the other side latches.

The resistor is separate. The blower will be large, round and have 3 screws. The resistor is small, square and only has two screws. They both mount on the bottom of the blower housing behind the glovebox.

It is definitely the motor. There are dead spots in the windings on the dc motor. That is why sometimes it wouldn't start but if you could skip it past the dead spot it will come on. Either would be fine. Remember not to worry a whole lot about mileage. A few miles can be a good thing. Too low mileage can indicate that the car was taken on a lot of short trips and was never allowed to heat up to operating temperature. That would cause a lot of wear and moisture inside the engine...

Wow, you're a lot better at the Internet than I am.

Here's the final tweak to my new controls. White LED's instead of orange bulbs. It matches the instrument cluster very well.

Today I took off the throttle body and cleaned it in hopes to squeeze out a bit more MPG. It was actually pretty dirty. There was a thick ring of build up around the butterfly valve.

I just finished up with changing the rear struts. I had to change them because they were causing some unusual tire wear. Surprisingly, it rides a lot nicer now. It was pretty bouncy at times.
