Wow, that definitely sounded like fun... You're right too, the service manual has a nice whole 4-step removal process that mentions nothing of the bolt issue you had. Definitely good to know especially for those that may be doing this in the future.

Well just got home. Had my Dad help as the 2nd person, took about 20 minutes. It took longer to take off the lower engine splash shield, but that made all the difference in clearance from underneath the vehicle. Didn't notice any noise difference, probably due to the naturally noisier 4 cyl. engine ...

Update: just got back from the dealer. Since I'm barely still under the 80,000 mile emissions warranty, they ended up replacing the catalytic converter for free (warranty!) I had my doubts, but they gave me no problems so I'm now a proud owner of a new converter!
