I haven't noticed any whispering. It's hard to say from here what might cause a grinding noise when the AC is running. Easiest guess is that the compressor is failing, but when the AC engages, it puts an extra load on the belt, which could theoretically affect something else on the belt. If not the ...

j/k, have a 1st gen, so can't really say, although I've owned 2 high mileage '03 vibes and a high mileage 03 matrix, and have yet to do struts on any of them. But yours put more miles on DC roads than mine.

One relatively quick thing to check is to see if the noise is present when the serpentine belt is removed.
