2004 GT Heat Shield Question

HI, Had to replace the exhaust manifold due to a crack in the manifold. Apparently GM does not make the upper portion of the shield anymore. Does anyone have any other resources I could check? I have done a lot of searching online and find nothing. Maybe the upper portion is really not needed? Thanks

Re: large mpg drop. 05 vibe gt 130000 miles

I had a similar issue a couple years ago. I do not drive my '04 GT in winter, but in spring I noted a pretty significant drop. I had pulled and cleaned the KN air filter in Fall when winterizing and forgotten to reconnect 2 vacuum tubes at the bottom/back side of the air filter box. No codes were th...

Re: '04 GT 6 Speed Shifting Question

GTV, I am no shifting expert, but I would have to say that it is as close to buttery smooth as I have experienced with this car. It is like night and day. I have owned the car since 21K, and I actually never liked to drive it because the shifting was horrible. That was probably the reason the clutch...

Re: (removed)!! Shifter Bushings Replaced - '04 GT 6 Speed

Just got done replacing the original rubber shifter bushings with Speed Source brass bushings. It was a little struggle, as the brass center of the old rubber bushings were basically welded on with corrosion but some PB Blaster and a pencil torch did the trick. The difference is REALLY, REALLY notic...

04 GT Pass. side front window broken

Came home today and the front pass. side window was broken. It was not hot (75 F). It had not been driven for a few days. It was in for a recall 5-6 years ago for a possible window breakage issue. Could the repair have failed again? I live in the boonies..no one would have messed with it, plus, it i...

Re: '04 GT 6 Speed Shifting Question

Thanks GTV. I should have stated that I would not want to downshift at 20, just that what I experience is way, way different than indicated in the owners manual. Would there be any other symptoms of worn shifter bushings, and would they have been worn at 21K, if the last guy did not know how to shif...

'04 GT 6 Speed Shifting Question

Hi, I have owned this GT since 21K. It now has 108K. From the first time I drove it until now, the downshifting in 2nd or 1st (so, going from 3rd to 2nd, then 2nd to 1st) can only occur at MUCH lower speeds than the owners manual states. The manual states I should be able to downshift from 2nd to 1s...

Re: Which to replace - Resistor or Blower Motor ?

second GTV's comment...my '04 GT had the resistor go out first...the "failsafe" I think is on high all the time. The blower went about a year later...I could tap under the dash/glove box for a while to get it to come on, but that eventually stopped working...both easy repairs.

Thanks trb and Vibrologist. The process sounds like someting I could do, but I am just not sure if I want to...there is quite a bit to consider. I feel good I was able to replace the e brake cables and e brake shoes this winter so maybe I can feel good about saving some $ on that and move on. The sh...

Re: '04 GT A/C Question

Hi, A follow up on this 10.2014 thread... The local repair shop I trust informed me the A/C compressor on my '04 GT is caput. It is not the clutch, which is what I was hoping. I was quoted $1000, which includes replacement of the A/C "filter", which I am not sure what that is, recharge, et...

Re: Smell gasoline and maybe exhaust

West, Last winter during a real cold spell, I smelled gas real strong when idling and driving. It ended up being the pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Mine is a '04 GT, and I thought the mechanic told me that is specific to the 2 ZZ engine. Ended up replacing the rail and pressure regulator as on...

Re: 04 GT Replaement of rear portion of e brake cables

Project done..Kitt hit everything on the head! The drivers side does grab more quickly than the Pass. side. I assume when I start driving it regularly in spring, there may be some additional adjustment of the adjuster in the rotor/drum or in the brake handle? It took a week working a couple hours ea...

Re: 04 GT Replaement of rear portion of e brake cables

Just an update...I think the most difficult thing about this job so far has been getting under the vehicle to get at the 2 heat shields. I broke one of the cable bracket bolts, so I had to drill it out an retap it. Otherwise, I have the cables ordered and the passenger side brake completely apart. I...

Re: 04 GT Replaement of rear portion of e brake cables

I don't recommend taking your time on it because it gets easy to misplace or forget about parts. What I recommend is having both rear wheels off so you can compare the side you're working on to how it "should" look. I had an issue with a PT Cruiser where it lost an adjustment lever in the...

04 GT Replaement of rear portion of e brake cables

Hi, I have a 04 GT with 107 K. I have to replace the rear "Y" portion of the e brake ables that lead to each rear brake, as one is locked up. By locked up, I mean the e brake lever, when applied, does almost nothing and the car can move easily on a hill. I tried adjusting the lever, but to...

'04 GT A/C Question

Hello, Recently, the A/C does not blow cold when the button is pushed. I read Ken's post from July, 2014 on his '03 GT with pretty much the same issue, and sent him a PM to see if that took care of the problem. However, mine does one thing different and that is when I push the A/C/ button, the engin...

'04 GT Rear Brake Question

Hi, '04 GT, 104K. I will be replacing the rear brake pads and rotors. They are disc with the emergency brake shoes inside the rotor. '06 GT Gas Question

Hi, I am considering buying a second GT. I have a '04 GT. The one I am considering is a '06. It has 55K miles on it. The previous owner stated he used regular gas, not the high octane. I have always used the high octane in my '04. Question is whether there may be some effects on the engine, etc., fr...

Hello, '04 GT, 103K miles. Towards the end of this winter (which was real long for us here in Northern WI...and still is..snow this morning), the temperature gauge started to not climb above about 1/3rd, even after driving for hours. Re: Gas smell turns out to be pressure regulator

One more thing worth mentioning. I also had the injectors cleaned, carbon deposits, throttle plate(s) and plenum cleaned at the same time. All I can say is WOW!, quite a difference in performance. Worth the price, I think. I will be interested to see how much it changes the mileage.

Gas smell turns out to be pressure regulator

I was checking the threads here in the past for gas smell inside my '04 GT (101K). Early last week, three times all of a sudden while warming up in -20 to -28 F temps, there was a strong gas smell in the vehicle, and also when I opened the hood. I had to take it in because I needed it for a trip, in...

Hello, my 04 GT factory stereo display has a light out on the left side of the display. The station number is difficult to see. Can barely see it during the day, and not much better at night. Hello, 04 GT 47K miles, 6-speed manual. Now that joatmon helped solve a smaller issue with a 2004 GT (43K miles), this one is likely more difficult. When accelerating (gently or otherwise), a slight but noticeable noise comes from the engine area. The noise is more pronounced with gears 1 through 4. To describe the noise is difficult, but ...

neutral safety switch

Hello, I have a 2004 Vibe GT, 43K miles. The clutch pedal arm needs to be depressed until it contacts the pad adjacent to the firewall, thus contacting the neutral safety switch. The pad has a line "embossed" in it where the clutch pedal arm contacts the firewall. It is difficult to believ...
