I remember in my Vibe, I always thought that when you hit the "OD" button it didn't really turn any overdrive off, it just downshifted a gear . . . OD off felt just like 3rd gear, and it never worked when you were in 1st through 3rd . . . so yeah.

If you add an intercooler, don't try to jam too much boost into it, use the right gas, and tune the computer, it'll work just fine. But it won't make huge HP numbers. I think the link I posted for Sport Compact Car's turbo matrix is floating around in one of these posts.

Yeah, just drive your car gently. My base-auto was great on gas, I'd get to school & back (50 miles each way) on about 3 gallons of gas. Just keep your foot off the gas pedal.
