The drive trains in these are pretty reliable. with slight variations throughout the years, the 1zz was in cars from the mid90s to 2008. given the longevity of these, its quite possible they do get pulled that fast. That is "left" when you stand in front of the car, correct? Typically that is referred to as the passenger side or right side. That's where the drive belt is. The most common oil leak is a failing O-ring of the timing chain tensioner on that side. I'd start with this suggestion. Next, if you haven'...

How's the transmission fluid and level? Or Rear diff? Is there any difference when turning one way or the other. Have you checked the CV axles? Does it make the noise in reverse?

I would not rely on a jack to hold up the engine while doing this if that is what is being suggested. I would suggest getting and using an engine support beam. There should be a hook on the engine designed for lifting the engine out which you can attach the beam to. You can use the jack as a second...

do the reverse light wires run through the hatch since the lights are in the bumper? I'd start at the reverse lights and follow the wires back. As for running the wires through the vehicle, you could totally remove the interior and run it under the carpet/kick plates along the doors to the front.
