Just pick up the gasket and filter from any parts store...Just grab both variants (17/18 bolt), make sure both are actually 17 or 18 bolts, and then install whichever is correct and return what is not. i've had many issues with the parts stores having the wrong gasket with the wrong filter or neithe...

If anything, I'd suspect the clock spring. They are fairly common to fail on these. One can be picked up, used, relatively cheap. Monkeywrenchracing sells their QRP, which is essentially their version of OEM at a fraction of the cost.

I'm not too well versed in radio stuff, but is it possible that the speakers are blown (or on their way out the door, pun intended)? I know in my 03 when the passenger side speakers were crocking, they put out noticeably less volume, but still worked persay.

09-10 Base is typical 1.8L SOME are the 2.4L, but not too many
09-10 AWD/GT = 2.4L
03-08 AWD/Base = 1.8L (1ZZ engine)
03-06 GT = 1.8L (2ZZ engine)

And for easy reference on wheel bolt patterns should you need it.

ALL 1.8L (03-10) are 5x100.
ALL 2.4L (09-10) are 5x114.3

P0420 is a bad converter 99% of the time. However, with an exhaust leak, it could be from that. I'd seal up that exhaust leak and see if the code persists. P0420 shouldn't cause you to not have lift.

when you tried to hit lift, did you ensure it was up to operating temperatures?

It's hard to base the worth on these solely on mileage. While I typically shy away from higher mile cars, with the Vibe/Matrix/Corolla, I usually wouldn't have that fear if I've got some records from the prior owner on maintenance. Three years ago, I bought my 03 GT with 230k miles on it for $1900. ...

Definitely sounds vacuum related. Since you have to take the air box out of the way to replace the clutch, I would check there. I would also look at the vacuum line running to the brake booster, since you have to reach back around that to the shifter cables.
