I have not tried the method of disconnecting the fuel injectors while running. Makes sense though. Someone told me you could also diagnose connecting or wrist pin bearings by turning the crankshaft by hand just past when the piston is at the top of its stroke and pushing down on it using a screwdive...

From what I have been reading online it seems that these 1ZZ-FE engines use a much softer metal for the bearing (e.g. aluminum, etc.) than the crankshaft or connecting rod journals (i.e. steel) so...

I can only weigh in on my experience with the 5-speed but yes the Redline MT-90 (GL-4) gear oil helped shifting at lower temperatures much better than the Valvoline 75W90 (GL-5) I had originally put in. The owners manual should tell you how much to put in when doing a simple drain and refill.

Can't seem to find just the piston part sold separately anymore as of February 2013. How lame. Guess it is time to fork it over for the full assembly. The dealer is asking for over $220 (wow!) so will be looking at aftermarket.

Just by hitting it with their hand and a rubber mallet it rattled, which meant the precious metal inside the converter had broken loose and was moving around. Thanks. Did they say what would happen if you did not replace it (other than poor emissions)? Damage to 02 sensors? Time to go get my rubber...

Mine vibe had a rattle also only between 2000-2500 rpm. Had it checked out during my oil change last week. Turned out to be my catalytic converter. Was quoted $470 for and oem converter and $165 to install it. Bought a Magnaflow converter on ebay for $65 shipped and found shop to install it for $80...

While I was at it ,I replaced the funky star-patterned screws that go from the electronic to metal parts of IACV with socket head cap screws. This way if I ever take it off again I won't have to force them out with pliers.

New IACV to throttle body gasket installed (Toyota Part # 22215-0D110). See the white scales in the left port of the IACV where the coolant runs? It looks to be corrosion, possibly caused by the previously mentioned leaking IACV gasket. Not sure though.

Petrucci914 - If you are still around did your coolant leaking through the IACV gasket look like this? My coolant used to be red (before I changed it) and there appears to be some "crystallized" on the air side of the gasket. Put in a new gasket after cleaning the throttle body, IACV, etc....

Just to clarify, the two pictures are the same fluid (Valvoline 75W-90) before and after being in my transmission. I couldn't say whether the Redline MT-90 is a different color but it definitely seemed to be thinner (i.e. less viscous) than the Valvoline stuff.

Also, what exactly would a "tune-up" constitute if it were necessary? I assume it would be replacement or adjustment that the computer does not automatically check and, if bad or out of specifications, would not necessarily set off the check engine light.
