You need a new mechanic. That is so basic for FWD cars, that if he couldn't diagnose it, don't let him repair it ! Serious.

Not necessarily. A bad fuel filter can show up is trying to go up a large hill. The car will get starved for fuel. Ever happen ?Plugs are cheap, and easy to replace. Probably needs them anyway, even if it doesn't fix the problem. Same for the fuel filter.

If it stalled, then I would look for something other than the clutch, such as air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs. (think air/fuel/spark) Trust me on this one - or do some google searches... Re: (rAERRK)

The best way to check for a worn clutch is to put on your emergency brake, then put your car in fifth gear and let the clutch out slowly. The engine SHOULD stall. If it doesn't, that means that the clutch is slipping and thus no stalling.

Yes you can, but I'll put my money on the fronts. Here's how to tell. While driving on a stretch of road, with no cars in back of you, use the emergency brake to slow the car down. The e-brake operates on the rear brake. IF you hear the noise, then it it the rear brakes that are worn. If you don't he...

Fronts are easy - never had to do the rear though. The rear are drum brakes on the base model - shouldn't be that hard.

Most dealers will still warranty a repair for a car that is only 100 miles out of warranty, but to me, it sounds like the battery. Buy, or borrow a battery charger and hook the car up to it for several hours. Also, you can check the battery voltage when the car is just sitting. It should be 12.6 vol...

Are you sure that new valve seals is part of a valve adjustment procedure. Seems to me that replacing seals is much more complicated that a valve adjustment. When I did it on a VW engine, I had to remove the camshaft - but that was quite a few years ago - with a VW Dasher !

Leaky valve stem seals can be detected by a small amount of oil being consumed, but more so by a puff of blue smoke when you start your car up in the morning because some oil will flow past the seals into the cylinders.
